The DJ's Frankensteinian approach to music is strangely listenable. True also features three other singles, 'You Make Me,' 'Hey Brother,' and 'Lay Me Down.'“Avicii cements himself in the pop/electronic dance world with ‘True’, filled with his typical anthemic sounds and massive feel good synths to accompany, but it all feels samey”Avicii: 'True' - Album review. There are several notable collaborators on True, one being Aloe Blacc, who is featured on 'Wake Me Up,' the album's first single. True is Avicii's debut studio album, in which he is said to have moved away from his well-known electronic sound.

Salem Al Fakir‘s (uncredited) soulful anthemic vocals give the same feel good impression as Wake Me Up. Overall, as a single, it opens up a very rich positive vibe, and I like it.You Make Me follows, with some nice sharp piano chords with a clean kick, giving a very upbeat vibe from the get go. It breaks down into an exotic guitar riff that is carried on by some rich synth bassline combos.
Avicii hasn’t dissapointed yet.Addicted to You opens with some light guitar melodies, with the rich female vocals from Audra Mae. While there are no synths, I find it to be a good catchy track. This track is a departure from the synths and plucks (folktronica), with more touching lyrics and trumpets that carry on in the chorus, with a bass piano to help. Opening with a simple country guitar, with the country vocal of Dan Tyminski it fits. Another strong track from Avicii. The 3rd track of the LP is the 2nd single – Hey Brother.
The smooth female vocals of Blondfire assist the pianos. It drops into the typical Avicii saw lead and bass combination we’ve come to appreciate, with this infectious pluck riff.Liar Liar opens with some more nostalgic sounding organ chords, with a rich vocal introduction by Aloe Blacc. While many don’t know this, the gorgeous vocals are from MØ, who also collaborated with Major Lazer, with some pianos in the background giving it life. The vocals are nice and emotional, but at the same time, it seems quite basic.Dear Boy returns to the Avicii synths, and it brings classic Avicii as well.
It’s decent.Shame on Me opens with a fast upbeat drum roll, and some jazzy vocals from Audra Mae from, on top of the even jazzier guitar riff. Personally, the drop is actually a nice change, but there was a lot of unused potential. The track drops into the organ chords with a kick and light bassline – a simple drop.
The track builds up, but it does that thing where you leave the drop. The drop is a set of soft square saw waves and I do like it.Hope There’s Someone opens quite weirdly, but it breaks into the gorgeous vocals of Linnea Henriksson, with a rich piano and bass line. It’s a good song, but parts feel like filler.Lay me Down opens with a typical drum beat and simple guitar melody, with the vocals of Adam Lambert and a gospel choir to bind this track together. And the daft punk vocals are nice.

Opening with some low distorted pianos and a pop-style vocal of Ruth-Anne Cunningham, it builds up these synths and drops into some this nice positive , Avicii style saw leads and pianos, with a kick-clap combo to slow it down. So far.All You Need is Love is the final track on the LP. Personally, it doesn’t fit on the album’s much lighter vibe, and it’s probably the weakest song on the LP.
Score: 6.75Avicii’s new album is a great starting point, but it lacks diversity, and sticks too close to the formula. It’s still good, and in some aspects, great (with some changes such as Hey Brother and Heart Upon My Sleeve), but they aren’t enough to give this an 8 or 9. But after that, it sounded recycled.Maybe it’s what he thought the fans wanted, but artistically, I can’t give it what I want to, sheerly because of how similiar things sound. Don’t get me wrong, almost every track on this LP is good, but Avicii doesn’t step outside his comfort zone, and stays too comfortable. The first 7 or 8 tracks made me want to give this an 8 or 9, and maybe if it was one half, it would get that. A lot of tracks sounded incredibly same, and there were times where I thought “this synth sounds the same as the last one”.It feels partly watered down. But it feels incredibly samey.
